Thanks for your comment, we are open for criticism. We have stayed in all suggested hostels personally! Last time we have been to Porto, we have stayed in The Passenger and Gallery Hostel, for instance.

You mention a suggested hostel has a rating of lower than 8; that was surprising for me since Portugal has high hostel standards. So below 8 is pretty bad for Portugal and Porto! I have checked again every single hostel we mention and personally know, and the “worst” rating on Booking.com is 8.6! You are absolutely right, we should only recommend hostels we stayed at and enjoyed – this is exactly what we do. I invite you to check other “best hostel” guides; you will see a massive difference in local knowledge. I also sent you a private email, I really want to improve all guides always.

Last but not least, you really pushed me over the edge for finally writing an extensive article on bed bugs in hostels. It is a big topic and there is some myths around it that I want to address. So thank you for this and stay tuned, it’ll be published soon.

You should have slept there and have a clear experience, which clearly didn’t happen. Since when hostels with bedbugs and rude staff, rated under 8 are part of the list of best hostels? Ask booking, TripAdvisor and Kayak.
