Absolutely! It really depends on the country. In Central Europe the concept of Hosteling is very common and well-known. Taking a gap-year can be an incredible experience!

But also it seems more common for people in other countries to take a few months or a year off to travel especially after uni but less common in the US. I think Americans would be smarter and happier if they did so… and more open minded and curious.
